How I Built a Business That Serves Me

Last week, I had the honour of speaking at Thrive Alive, an online entrepreneur conference filled with incredible men and women building purpose-driven businesses.
My topic?
How I built a business that serves me, not the other way around.
Because for far too long, I believed that once you became a vet, you had to stay one… forever.
We study for years, sacrifice so much, and wrap our entire identities around the title.
So walking away?
That felt impossible. Maybe even irresponsible.
Challenging the “Vet for Life” Mindset
When I first thought about closing my clinic, it terrified me.
Everyone around me, friends, family, even colleagues, questioned it.
"But you worked so hard to get here…"
"Are you sure you’re not just burnt out?"
"How will you make money?"
And trust me, I asked myself all of those questions too.
It took me two full years to finally make the decision.
Two years of self-doubt, second-guessing, and wondering if I was throwing everything away.
But one day, I had this realization:
If it didn’t work, I could always go back.
So I took the leap.
💡 What Happened Next Changed Everything
I began building a digital business using the skills and knowledge I already had as a veterinary professional.
I created simple digital products—PDFs, templates, mini-courses—and shared them online with an audience of other vets and pet professionals.
And guess what?
✨ I now earn 3x more than I did as a full-time clinician
✨ I work ⅓ of the hours
✨ And most importantly—I’m a present mom
I don’t miss bedtime anymore.
I’m not running on empty.
And I’ve built a business that fits my life, not the other way around.
We even have three horses now—something I could never afford (or make time for) when I was working full-time as a vet. Now, I actually get to ride and enjoy them.
