What if I choose the wrong online niche and waste months?

Jan 08, 2026
There’s a question I hear so often from vet professionals who are thinking about starting something online:

“What if I choose the wrong niche and waste months?”

And every time I hear it, I’m reminded of something very familiar in vet med:
that moment when you’re standing in front of a case and you think you know what’s going on… but you’re not certain.

So you start with your best guess.

Not because you’re careless, but because that’s how good medicine works.
A diagnosis rarely arrives fully formed.
You begin with a working theory.
You run a test.
You check a result.
You rule something in.
You rule something out.
And little by little, you narrow your way toward clarity.

Each step, even the ones that don’t give you the answer still gets you closer to the truth.

That’s exactly how finding your Niche works.

So many vet professionals get stuck thinking they have to choose the perfect niche right away.
They are worried that if I picked wrong, they will lose time.

Your first niche is simply your first working diagnosis.
You start with your best idea, the one that feels interesting or meaningful.
You test it by taking small actions.
You observe how people respond.
You notice what energises you and what doesn’t.
You gather data from the real world… not from your head.

And just like in clinical practice, the more information you collect, the clearer things become.

This is why around 80% of people pivot from the first niche they choose online.
Not because they failed, but because they gathered new information and adjusted accordingly.

Pivoting isn’t a mistake.
It’s a sign you’re doing the work.

Just like running bloods, or imaging, or a follow-up test… every step brings you closer to the real diagnosis, the niche that fits your strengths, your experience, and the people you genuinely want to help.

So if you’re worried about wasting months, here’s what I want you to hold onto:

There is no “wrong” niche.
There are only starting points.
And each one moves you closer to the right place.

You find your niche the same way you find a diagnosis, not by guessing perfectly on the first go,
but by taking thoughtful steps and letting clarity grow through the process.

And one day you look up, just like with a good case, and realise:

You’re not guessing anymore.

You’ve found the thing that fits.
