Where to Start Your Online Business: Step One, Choose a Profitable Niche

Sep 04, 2025

Starting something new can feel overwhelming, especially when your family, finances, and future are on the line.

Recently, one of my readers shared this with me:

“I’ve spent years working hands-on with animals, but lately I’ve been craving a way to earn extra income without burning myself out. I want to be there for my family, keep my business afloat, and stop worrying about whether I’ll be able to cover the bills each month.

The problem is, I have no idea where to start. There are so many options and it all feels a little overwhelming.”

If that resonates with you, you’re not alone. Many pet professionals reach this point. You’ve invested years into your career, but now you want to create extra income, more flexibility, and time for the people you love.

The question is: where do you start?

Step One: Choose a Profitable Niche

When you’re starting an online business, your first step isn’t to design a website, open an Instagram account, or spend weeks creating content. It’s to choose your niche, the area you’ll focus on that’s both profitable and aligned with your skills.

Think of a niche as the sweet spot where your expertise meets what people are actively searching for (and willing to pay for).

How to find your niche:

  1. Look at your experience
What do you already know? Maybe it’s animal health, training, nutrition, or even running a pet business.

  2. Think about the problems you solve
Pet owners are looking for answers:

    • How can I help my senior dog move better?

    • What’s the best way to support my pet after surgery?

    • How can I keep my dog active and comfortable at home?

  3. Each of these questions could become the foundation of a niche.

  4. Check profitability
Here’s a golden rule: the amount of pain someone is going through is directly proportional to how much they are prepared to pay you to help solve their problem.

    • A pet owner with a dog who’s slightly fussy about food may not be willing to pay much for advice.

    • But a pet owner whose dog can’t walk after surgery will happily pay for a program, guide, or support that helps them get their beloved companion moving again.

  5. When you pick a niche that addresses urgent, painful problems, you create an offer people value enough to pay for.

  6. Start small
You don’t need to serve everyone. Pick a narrow niche (e.g., “at-home mobility exercises for senior dogs”) instead of trying to cover all pet health. Narrower focus = stronger connection with your audience.

If you’re feeling like this reader, scared, overwhelmed, and unsure, know that you don’t have to have it all figured out today. Just focus on one thing: your niche.

Once you’ve chosen it, everything else becomes easier: your content, your products, your offers, even your confidence.

Your online business journey doesn’t have to mean 70-hour work weeks. It can mean freedom, flexibility, and income that fits into your life. And it all starts with this one simple step.
